Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat station is one of the 236 operated by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution throughout the UK and Ireland. The station and its volunteer crew provides a round the clock marine search and rescue service covering local coasts and up to 100 nautical miles out to sea. We are located on the historic North Shields Fish Quay, just inside the mouth of the River Tyne on the North East coast of England.
There have been lifeboats on the river Tyne since 1790 when the world’s first purpose-built lifeboat Original was stationed nearby. The RNLI established a station at Tynemouth in 1862 which has 29 volunteer crewmembers who come from all walks of life. We operate two lifeboats: Severn class all weather lifeboat Spirit of Northumberland and D class inshore lifeboat Mark Noble.
The RNLI is a charity independent of Government and Coastguard, and receives no funding from the UK government. Our volunteer lifeboat crews and our lifeguards can’t save lives at sea without your support.
